New space for innovation: sustainable structures for efficient and flexible logistics

It is an investment in the future: Together with representatives from politics, business and society, BMW Group Landshut plant manager Ralf Hattler and Goodman Head of Business Development for Germany Christof Prange laid the foundation stone for a new supply centre near the municipality of Ergolding.

From mid-2017, the Landshut production plant will use the approximately 48,000 sqm supply centre to efficiently distribute the innovative materials and finished components produced at the Lower Bavarian plant to the BMW Group’s vehicle and engine production plants worldwide.

“The new supply centre is the central pillar in the structural development of our site,” Ralf Hattler said in the course of the event. “With it, we are optimising our logistical flows inside and outside the plant as well as creating space for the production of new, innovative components. Thus we will emerge strengthened as a competence centre for lightweight construction and electric mobility, which will enable us to remain competitive in the long term.”

District Administrator Peter Dreier described the property as a “strong signal for the industry and business location of Landshut.” The investment contributes to securing long-term prosperity and employment in the region.

After completion, the BMW Group will lease the facility from Goodman. The operations will be managed by a logistics service provider.

“Our customers rely on us to provide them with property solutions that help them drive their businesses forward,” Christof Prange said. “Therefore, we are proud we are able to strengthen our cooperation with BMW Group with this new state-of-the-art logistics facility and once again demonstrate our ability to develop complex logistics properties for the automotive sector.”

At the same time, the new supply centre reflects the high sustainability standards of both companies. Due to a variety of measures, the property developed by Goodman will receive a gold certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) after completion. Once the facility becomes operational, the traffic volume around the existing plant gates will be reduced significantly through the consolidation of production and logistics in one location, providing significant relief for residents and the environment.

To connect the distribution centre directly to the existing plant, the BMW Group is investing in a two-lane underpass under the Munich-Plattling railway line. Electric trucks will ensure transfer as cleanly and quietly as possible.

Willibald Löw, works council chairman at the BMW Group plant, confirmed: “Moving into the supply centre is a big vote of confidence in the location of Landshut and the people who work here. Just in time for our 50th anniversary next year, we are setting the course for the future.”
