Goodman and Zalando celebrate first stone of the new 130,000 sqm logistics centre in Lahr, Southern Germany

Tuesday, 16 February 2016

Today Goodman and Zalando, Europe’s leading online fashion platform, celebrated the laying of the first stone of a new 130,000 sqm logistics centre being developed by Goodman in Lahr, Southern Germany. The event was attended by 100 guests including Peter Hofelich, State Secretary of Baden-Württemberg, Dr. Wolfgang G. Müller, Mayor of Lahr, and Jean-Marc Willer, Mayor of Erstein in France. On completion, Goodman will manage the new ecommerce logistics facility, which will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe upon completion.

The new location will allow Zalando to better serve its customers in Southern Germany, Switzerland and France and to meet increasing customer demand. Test operations for the new site are planned for as early as Autumn 2016. Once operational, the new facility will create about 1,000 jobs at the site and is expected to employ workers from both Germany and France.

“With this new facility we further expand our logistics network. The new facility benefits from our experiences and will have new advantages featuring enhanced design and automation,” said Christoph Stark, Vice President Logistics at Zalando SE. “These improvements and the new location will allow us to be closer to our customers and to offer shorter delivery times.”

Longstanding relationship

As with its logistics centres in Erfurt and Mönchengladbach, both developed in two phases, Zalando has chosen to collaborate with Goodman, representing the fifth project that Goodman has signed with Europe’s leading online fashion platform.

“We have enjoyed a true partnership with Zalando, working together as a single team to deliver modern and advanced properties to help the company better serve its customers in a highly competitive online marketplace,” said Jordan Corynen, Goodman Regional Director for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “With each project, we are able to evolve in our technical design and use our experience to provide quick and qualitative results.”

Strategic location
Lahr was chosen over a range of other German locations in the search process. “We decided on the new location in Southern Germany not only because of the proximity to France and Switzerland, but also the strong infrastructure. Our relationship is built on trust with the state, municipal development company IGZ and the city of Lahr, and is a good basis for our future collaboration,” Stark added.

“The first stone for Zalando is not only good news for all fashion lovers in Baden-Württemberg, but it also underlines the attractiveness of our region. In addition to this, the project is a good example of how land conversion can create new opportunities for employment and facilitate economic growth,” said Peter Hofelich, State Secretary of Baden-Württemberg.

“The project for Zalando in the industrial park at the Lahr airport stands out in many aspects: Comprising 18.5 ha, it is our biggest land sale ever, while no other single project has previously generated around 1,000 new jobs. And probably never before have we faced so much competition from other municpalities in the initial phase,” said Dr. Wolfgang G. Müller, Mayor of Lahr. “This project was possible due to the trust and close cooperation between us and the representatives of Zalando and Goodman.”

“The new location for Zalando is an example of the economic success of great cross-border cooperation in our region. It brings new jobs for French and German employees in the fast growing ecommerce sector. We are delighted that Zalando customers in France, Germany and Switzerland will soon be served from people in our region,” said Jean-Marc Willer, Mayor of Erstein in France.
