Property group Goodman and food retailer REWE Group today celebrated the opening of a new state-of-the-art logistics centre in Leipzig. Developed by Goodman, the new logistics hub has been constructed specifically for the handling and distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables to REWE Group’s regional retail outlets. Goodman’s handover of the approx. 11,000 sqm property in the GVZ South III freight village to its customer, has been achieved just six months after the start of construction. The flexible leasing solution offered by Goodman means that it will continue to manage the facility for REWE Group after handover.
Locally sourced fresh food is a key purchasing decision for many consumers and a quality seal for retailers. It requires short distances to end customers and a reliable cold storage chain right into the shop. This made it necessary to incorporate two cooling zones and specially insulated walls into the new development, while selecting the right location to optimise REWE’s logistics network in the Leipzig area. These factors ensured that REWE Group found the right solution in its co-operation with Goodman.
From the warehouse in Leipzig, Goodman offers its customer good connections from the new fruit and vegetable hub warehouse to the regional warehouses in the Berlin, Dresden and Leipzig/Halle areas. With the integrated refrigeration technology, the property is tailored precisely to the requirements of the food retail sector.
“Fruit and vegetables are a very sensitive class of goods, which make a major contribution to our image. With the strategy of the hub warehouse, we are expanding and optimising our logistics in this line of goods. In Goodman, we found an expert partner for the project in Leipzig that developed the optimum solution with great speed and excellent specialist knowledge of our logistics processes,” said Eugenio Guidoccio REWE Group Fruit Logistics Manager.
Today, Goodman and REWE Group symbolically brought the new logistics centre into operation with the entry of an initial load of fruit. Goodman has invested approx. €10 million in the property solution.
“We are delighted that REWE Group selected Goodman to develop their new logistics hub and recognised the advantages of our flexible leasing solution. Traditionally, many food retail businesses tend to own their properties rather than leasing a built-to-suit development,” said Jordan Corynen Goodman Director Germany. “We supported our customer from start to finish including the planning, site analysis and financing concept for the refrigeration technology.”
The fruit and vegetable hub warehouse comprises 10,000 sqm of logistics space as well as approx. 1,000 sqm of offices and staff rooms. The fresh fruit and vegetables delivered each day are temporarily stored in two cooling zones before onward transport. The first zone can be controlled from 4 to 5°C while the second covers a temperature range from 10 to 12°C. The loading ramps, external walls and roof are specially insulated. A total of 38 loading gates facilitate a rapid turnover of goods by the customer.
