How Goodman is optimising its energy use in The Netherlands

Our increasing level of rooftop solar and lighting upgrades, as well as a range of other energy efficient measures all contribute to our projected carbon neutral status. These and other investments showcase how Goodman is determined to reach its targets of 100% renewable energy use and carbon neutral operations by 2025.

Solar pv

Solar energy is a CO2-free renewable energy source. It produces no greenhouse gases and needs no fuel or other resources such as water or wind to produce electricity. In the Netherlands we have tripled the capacity of our rooftop solar and we will have at least 18 MW installed by 2025. Our properties’ solar supply exceeds the operational demands of our customers, allowing us to inject clean energy back into the power grid, available locally for private consumers. It is estimated that our PV installations to date in The Netherlands prevent the production of 7,400 tons of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of the emissions produced by approximately 3,700 households annually.

Quick fact

Over the next few decades, the Netherlands will be phasing out gas-powered heating and cooking in favour of cleaner alternatives, with other European nations expected to follow soon. In order to meet and exceed these regulations, we’re already working on reducing our properties’ reliance on non-renewable sources such as gas for heating.

Net-zero carbon emission building for sustainable operations

In The Netherlands, Goodman’s intermediate goal of developing net-zero carbon emission buildings was reached some time ago. This means that we have delivered properties that are both energy saving and comfort enhancing, providing sustainability for all.

Features of a net-zero carbon emission building:

  • Gasless: heat pumps and IR heaters
  • High insulation to increase the building’s energy performance
  • 100% powered by renewable energy, rooftop solar to cover the customer’s energy needs
  • Smart meters at unit level to support customers in reducing energy consumption
  • LED lighting to save energy consumption

Energy performance of our portfolio in The Netherlands

LED lighting in our properties delivers better quality lighting and saves energy. By the end of 2022, almost 80% of our properties in the Netherlands will be equipped with smart meters enabling our customers to proactively optimise their energy usage, while 85% of our buildings will be illuminated with LED lighting. All our properties have now EV charging stations and we are proud that our entire Dutch portfolio is BREEAM certified.
